POWER : PLAY is the title of this years EXPLODING CINEMA program, which
focuses on the growing overlap of politics and entertainment, work and play.
Inspired by computer games, an increasing number of artists and designers
are exploiting this relatively young audiovisual technique. While visual
artists and film makers explicitly borrow their rhetoric from game culture,
gamers on the other hand modify existing formats to introduce an element of
criticism.
The main locations are FIGHT CLUB (activist arcade in OffCorso) and FRIENDLY
FIRE (exhibition in Tent.). The POWER : PLAY film programme includes
features, documentaries and short films inspired by game culture. Daily live
events, exclusive presentations and incidental activities complete the
program. POWER : PLAY is curated by IFFR programmer Edwin Carels. You are
invited to join forces!

THE PROJECT
A team of 9 students from the Willem de Kooning Academy / CMD plus 3 MA
Media Design students from the Piet Zwart Institute will have the
opportunity to participate in the POWER : PLAY live events. The team will be
responsible for preparing info, documentation and commentary on a weblog;
will contribute to the discussions in OffCorso and exchange ideas in
informal meetings with speakers.
Participating in this project will allow you to take a closer look at
critical gaming culture, face to face with artists and designers who are
actively engaged in it. You will contribute to the debate around gaming and
share your views with other students and an interested public. The
discussions take place every afternoon between Friday 23rd and Friday 30th
of January in the main hall of OffCorso. There will be space available at
the Festival headquarters to work on-line before and after the discussions.
Tutorial support: Nadia Palliser, Aldje van Meer, Roger Teeuwen, Hanne
